What Leadership Skills Should I Develop?
There are a number of leadership skills or competencies that anyone wanting to lead and direct others should develop.
Competencies are the core characteristics that are required in positions for superior performance in an individual's role. They are those characteristics that are essential for a person to demonstrate to be a successful leader.
Leadership Competencies are those behaviours that contribute to superior performance
So, what are the competencies or leadership skills that a leader should develop so that they will be able to create willing followers? Please note that here we are referring to skills and not traits or characteristics.
If you want to be effective as a leader you first need to develop the skills of
self-management and self-awareness without first understanding yourself it is very difficult to work with and motivate others.
Communication Skills are absolutley essential. Leadership has as its cornerstone the ability to communicate effectively. Skills in performance management and managing people are essential to enable you to monitor performance, motivate and encourage your team of people, to conduct performance appraisals and esnure that your team are working on the right things and are not just busy. This also means that you need excellent delegation skills. Delegation is a tool of management and an excellent time management tool when used effectively. However, used poorly it can create a lot of problems. Other competencies that an effective leader should develop includes strong presentation skills , interpersonal skills, effective time management. The list can go on to include decision making skills, effectively running meetings,negotiation skills,leading change, creating a motivating environment and more.
